Don’t Let Time Drift By…

Time

What is it that makes giving up so easy?

It’s now been almost a year since I posted something on this Blog. Despite me writing about losing your MOJO, keeping yourself motivated, encouraging others to do something physical, (what a hypocrite). I too almost gave up. Even going as far as cancelling my Gym membership. I allowed the winter months to sap my energy and almost kill my enthusiasm. It all started back in September 2017, when I took part in the iconic Great North Run, Half Marathon. Although I managed to finish in a reasonable time for my age group, finishing in 2hrs.4min. I still beat myself up for not hitting my target of under 2hrs.

Don’t Walk Run!

As I approached mile ten, it felt as though my body was shutting down, and for the first time, in a very long time I actually stopped, not walking, I just stopped. I wasn’t breathless, it wasn’t cramp or anything like that, I just felt an overwhelming desire to just STOP! I simply stood at the side of the road and watched as people passed me. In truth I think I was experiencing the onset of exhaustion. Then after a brief moment of self pity, that voice inside my head said “don’t walk RUN“.

I managed to summon up the willpower to get going again but in truth I hated every minute of it and I was glad to see the finish line in front of me. Running was not the same after that, the enjoyment and challenge was gone. I looked for all the excuses, for not putting my trainers on and hitting the hills again. From October and throughout the winter months I only managed 4 or 5 runs, I also picked up a number of chest infections, which only added to my reasons for not doing any physical exercises whatsoever.

Time to set a NEW GOAL

Before I knew it six months had passed and I found myself looking in the mirror, although I’m still quite trim for a 58 year old. I felt that I had let myself and my standards slip, it was time to reset some goals. I reminded myself that if we don’t set any goals, and I’m not just referring to fitness goals here, life goals. We are simply allowing time to drift by without any real purpose.
(hence the title of this post).

Setting Goals

I needed to remind myself that GOALS play an enormous part in our lives. Nevertheless, I know quite a few people who don’t seem to have any, they just appear to accept their lot, and you guessed it they let time drift by. So for those like me who feel we have more to offer, and can achieve much more if we put our minds to it. Lets do some goal setting shall we. For the record when I first set out on this physical journey, my aim was to be FAST at 50, simply Fit and Still Training throughout my 50’s. One of the long term goals I set was to have a SIX PACK at SIXTY. #SIXPACKATSIXTY To some this may seem to be vanity driven, but not all of my life goals are based on fitness, but without being and feeling healthy, how could I enjoy those other goals I set myself.

A goal above all needs to be challenging, so challenge yourself. You also need to have a plan on how you are going to achieve your goals, another important aspect is to write them down and commit. We all without doubt make New Year’s Resolutions, but how many of us actually write out a plan on how we are going to achieve them.

I watched an interesting TED Talk a few days ago and it puts in perspective how, if we make very small changes to our routine, we can accomplish anything, especially if it is something we really want to do. Find the time to watch this, it may help you, it may not seem that relevant at first, but I’m confident it will inspire some of you..

If you haven’t yet set any clear goals for the future consider setting them under the following headings:

Physical
Financial
Career
Relationship/Family
Travel
Educational

You can choose your own headings these are just some of the ones I focus on. For example my financial goal when I first set it was to be financially independent by the time I reached 55. That time has passed, and at times I feel that I am nowhere nearer to being financially independent than I was over 15 years ago, when it was first set. But that doesn’t mean I have given up on this goal. I simply re-set it. The truth is when I first set this goal I never actually put in place a plan, detailing how I was to achieve such a goal. So as the image above illustrates without a plan your goals are just wishes or dreams, dreams you will never achieve unless you have a plan. A plan that you commit to, more importantly as the video above focuses on “make small changes/marginal adjustments to your routine“. Above all don’t let time drift by…
